Fierce Mzansi female chefs Mogau Seshoene and Zanele Van Zyl take the November cover of Bona Magazine

Mzansi women are rising! Chefs Mogau Seshoene, aka The Lazy Makoti, and Zanele Van Zyl, aka Cooking with Zanele, are Bona Magazine’s November issue cover moguls, and we don’t even have to ask why.

Funeka Peppeta, That Food Guy Group® Shareholder and Senior Account Lead, showed industry support at the cover reveal event, which took place at The Harv Table in Sandton on 27 October 2022.

The event was heaving with fierce female energy that made evident the waves women are making in the food and beverage industry in South Africa.

While the Lazy Makoti and chef Zanele are both powerhouses in their own individual rights, this cover emphasises the greatness they have been able to achieve as one.

There is a seat for every lady at the table, so let’s feast together

With females having had to fight that much harder to make their mark, especially in male-dominated industries, it left little room for unity. However, inspirational and successful women like Mogau and Zanele are slowly changing this narrative, one powerful partnership at a time, and we are here for it!

Mogau grew up in a township in Limpopo where culture thrust expectations on girls to become the perfect makotis. Learning quickly that women are so much more than what primitive expectations make them out to be, Mogau created The Lazy Makoti to help women do it all. Her inspiration behind her cookbooks and brand as a whole was to help women fulfil their roles as makotis while still being able to build empires and pursue their dreams. Thanks to Mogau, you can now put wholesome meals on the table for your family and still crush it as a fierce female in the modern world.

Zanele is a proud Zulu woman who is fuelled by family. Coming from a big family and humble beginnings, Zanele cherished the moment’s food allowed her to share with her loved ones. Watching her mom create these moments and memories for the family through food is what sparked Zanele’s passion for cooking. She is now a qualified chef who loves to teach other women to cook so that they, too, can create everlasting memories for their loved ones through shared meals that don’t break the bank.

With big plans for cooking shows, international domination and many other incredible things to come, Mogau and Zanele know the importance of bringing women together, which is why they embody it in everything they do.

Mogau and Zanele want women out there to know that there is a seat for everyone at the table and that the feast (success) is so much greater when everyone brings a dish. They are living and thriving examples of exactly that!
